General Accessibility Information

The Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine (CMTM) is committed to making our facilities and programs accessible and safe for all members of our community, regardless of race, ethnicity, national origin, faith, sexual orientation, gender identity, and range of abilities. We are actively working to increase the accessibility and usability of our website, building, and educational activities. In doing so, we adhere to the available standards and guidelines and, in many cases, go beyond the guidelines to uphold our philosophy that every family deserves a safe place to play and learn in our community.

General Accessibility

  • The entire Museum & Theatre is ADA accessible.

  • There are two handicap-accessible parking spaces in front of our yellow front doors and two more next to the outdoor playground. Visitors are not required to pay for parking if using an accessible space. Check Getting Here & Parking for more information.

  • The elevator serves all three floors of CMTM.

  • The main doors have power assist openers.

  • Restrooms are wheelchair accessible.

  • On high-volume days, we ask visitors to avoid using large strollers unless they're actively in use for infants, babies, or being used for accessibility needs. Please let a Welcome Desk staff member know if you have any questions.

  • All genders are welcome to use any restroom. A gender-neutral/family restroom is located on the 2nd floor.

  • Breastfeeding is welcome anywhere; a private and comfortable Nursing Nook is located on the 2nd floor.

  • Service dogs and service miniature horses are welcome. Service animals are defined as dogs or miniature horses that are individually trained to do work or perform tasks for people with disabilities. Animals whose sole function is to provide comfort or emotional support do not qualify as service animals under the ADA. Pets are not allowed on the premises or campus. CMTM occasionally offers programs that include therapy animals - check the Calendar of Events for details.

  • A limited number of adult wheelchairs and walker are available, free of charge, at the Welcome Desk.

  • A limited number of wheelchair lap tables are available.

  • A limited number of strollers are available, free of charge, at the front desk.

  • A limited number of sound-reducing earmuffs are available, free of charge, at the Front Desk. The earmuffs fit children about 0-12 years old.

Admission Policies

CMTM will grant free admission to any therapeutic staff support, counselor, doctor, therapist, or nurse accompanying a visitor as part of their professional responsibilities or as additional support to a caregiver. An employee badge or valid photo identification is required. Email guestservices@kitetails.org for more information.

Food, Beverages, & Allergies

Please note that food and drink are only permitted in the 1st-floor atrium. Visitors are also welcome to bring food and drink to the picnic tables and benches at the Outdoor Adventure Playground and Gather Lawn.

Water bottles, baby bottles, and nursing are welcome anywhere in the building.

Regarding Allergies:

  • Gathering and eating spaces are cleaned regularly by our staff using a non-toxic cleaning spray.

  • If you or your child have food allergies that prevent you from eating in a public space, please do not hesitate to ask a staff member for assistance.

  • CMTM is a Latex-free environment. All event décor must be Mylar (a material used in balloons made from polyester film), and all gloves used for cleaning or science experiments are non-latex.

  • We encourage visitors to avoid bringing snacks that contain nuts; however, we cannot guarantee CMTM is a nut-free environment.
